Surgical Gloves

Maintaining a clean and sterile operating room is crucial for infection control and successful surgical outcomes. Surgeons and their teams take extensive precautions to ensure that both the environment and their apparel are sterile. Surgical gloves play a pivotal role in upholding infection control standards and ensuring a sterile site during procedures. Typically, surgical gloves are packed in sterile pairs, providing the surgical team with unexposed, sterile options for each operation.

Unlike standard exam gloves, surgical gloves are designed for a snug fit while remaining flexible and comfortable. They often feature curved fingers and are tailored for both the right and left hands. Surgical gloves are generally longer, measuring between 11”-12”, compared to exam gloves, which are usually 8”-10” long. Additionally, surgical gloves can be worn over an underglove, which serves functions like acting as a puncture indicator for the outer glove.

While many manufacturers have moved away from producing latex exam gloves, latex surgical gloves remain widely available. Many of these latex gloves are designed to minimize the risk of dermatitis. For those seeking latex-free options, synthetic materials like polyisoprene or neoprene are commonly used.

Traditionally, surgical gloves contained powder to facilitate easy donning. However, regulatory changes have led to the production of powder-free gloves, utilizing advanced gel technology to ensure ease of use, even with damp hands. This transition eliminates complications associated with starch powder.

Surgical gloves are generally more expensive than exam gloves, with entry-level surgical options priced around $26 for a box of 25 pairs, while vinyl exam gloves can cost about $4 for a box of 100. The higher cost of surgical gloves stems from their sterile packaging, precise sizing, and superior fit. Surgical gloves are often available in half sizes, ranging from 5.5 to 9.0, and are designed for enhanced comfort and flexibility. Many feature a curved finger design and have a smooth or micro-textured surface to prevent slippage.

One of the most popular choices among surgical gloves is the Ansell Encore Perry Style 42, a latex, powder-free option that balances protection and sensitivity at an affordable price. Additionally, surgical gloves are often colored to reduce glare from bright surgical lights, which is particularly important with the advent of LED surgical lighting. Notable product families include the Ansell Derma Prene, Ansell Gammex, and Molnlycke Health Care Biogel surgical gloves.
